iPod touch 3G

Matthew Panzarino thinks the “iPhone lite” could be a 3G-equipped iPod touch:

If you compile the general rumors about Apple’s touch screen devices, you end up with the iPad, iPad HD, iPhone 5, iPhone ‘lite’ and iPod touch 3G. In the end, I think that the last two on that list are actually the same device. The ‘iPhone lite’ could actually just be a 5th gen iPod touch.

It’d have contract-free data plans like the iPad, of course.

I think what’s more interesting than a 3G-equipped iPod touch is the idea that Apple’s moving toward devices that use data exclusively. This would mean everything—including voice and text messages—are handled entirely through the data network.

It makes sense, of course. But that reality is a ways away, because it will require data coverage to be much more thorough and resilient than they are currently.
