Developers, This is Your Job

June 25th, 2011

Wil Shipley wrote this in 2009, but it’s still absolutely relevant:

The field of computer interaction is still in its infancy. Computers are too hard to use, they require us to waste our brains learning too many things that aren’t REAL knowledge, they’re just stupid computer conventions.

It’s up to us to fix this.

I love that. It’s a great way to define what a UI designer and application developer’s job is: it’s to think through your application and interface so much, the user doesn’t have to have the mental overhead of figuring out what you intended when you designed the application. All they have to think about is their work, or whatever it is they’re doing.
