J. Kenji Lopez-Alt and team flew in an In N Out Double-Double from California and put In N Out, Five Guys and Shake Shack to the test.
I can’t comment on Shake Shack, because I haven’t been able to try it yet, but I have had Five Guys—and there’s no contest between In N Out and Five Guys. A Double-Double wins. Every time.
A Five Guys burger isn’t bad, but it’s unremarkable, and the bun doesn’t stand up to the burger. It falls apart about half way through eating a burger, and that’s no good.
