Apple to Require All In-App Purchases Go Through Them

January 31st, 2011

Apple has tightened their rules for in-app purchases in iOS applications:

The company has told some applications developers, including Sony, that they can no longer sell content, like e-books, within their apps, or let customers have access to purchases they have made outside the App Store.

That’s disastrous for Amazon and users. I use the Kindle application often and have made a small investment in Kindle books. If this forces Amazon to remove their Kindle application from iOS devices, I may have to buy a Kindle.

Update: The New York Times updated the article to say that any ebooks purchased from within applications must go through Apple’s in-app purchases, users will be able to access content purchased outside of applications.
