Thom Yorke explains why Radiohead likely won’t make another album:
The problem isn’t the format – “obviously, there’s still something great about the album,” Yorke said – but with the scale and consistency of vision that is required. “In Rainbows was a particular aesthetic and I can’t bear the idea of doing that again. Not that it’s not good, I just can’t … bear … that.”
They plan instead to release singles and EPs, which can be recorded in a much shorter time.
I certainly understand their reason, and especially because of how complex Radiohead’s music can be, but this is, nonetheless, sad to hear. Radiohead, and specifically In Rainbows, is special; their albums are concepts rather than just collections of songs, every last detail thought through. The whole is greater than the sum of its parts.
That’s special, and it’s something that individual songs will never attain.
