Fix the App Store Charts

Tap Tap Tap argues Apple should solve the “ringtone app” problem by basing popularity charts on gross revenue, rather than units sold:

Developers who’ve been put off by the current atmosphere of the App Store would likely be giving things another look which means that we’d have a better chance of seeing higher quality titles come to the store. Everyone wins… well, except the shovelware creators and I’m sure few will miss them.

Certainly an interesting proposal. This would eliminate the artificial benefit of severely reducing an app’s price, which is ranking highly on the app popularity charts, while keeping in tact the natural market benefit of reduced prices.

Moreover, it will promote a more organic price-point for apps, because if the charts are based on gross revenue, an app’s position in the charts will be a balance of unit sales and its price.
